Biplane Command
is a prototype of a Flight Sim command interface for a RTT.
The player flys around in a biplane, and orders troops around
on the ground below.
It was a great
success, as the prototype was very fun to play. The mixed
gameplay of concentrating on flying the plane, and ordering
your troops around on the ground was fun.
It solves the two
main problems that most "FPS / RTS" mixes have,
which are:
A) That the player has a bad field of view of the battlefield,
and unlike a real commander, does not have the skill to keep
the whole battlefield in his mind.
B) The player wants to do something, such as shoot enemies,
but doing this tends to stop him from commanding. This doubles
the amount of game that needs to be made. In biplane command,
the player gets to fly around, dodging things sometimes, and
dropping bombs. None of these things stop the player commanding
his troops.
Another advantage
of this game design, is that it has little direct competition.
Nothing like it has been made.
