Engine of War is a game that combines creative building
with fast action.
Engine of War is made of two main parts, a fast
paced arcade game, and a electric circuit simulator. The circuit
sim is the unique part. The player's charactor in the arcade section
of the game is a 'Mech' and the electric circuit directly affects
it, its movement, its weapons, its shields, and all of its various
abilities.
The circuit is made of 'parts' connected with wires.
Each part either affects the circuit in someway (a IF part), or
directly affects the arcade game section (a weapon part).
Example: The player adds a shield generator into
the circuit. This gives the player shields in the arcade section
of the game. The player can further define a shield frequency,
and route various amounts of power towards maximum amount of shield
charge and shield regeneration.
The player then creates a system that slowly charges
a battery, and builds a system for draining this battery into
the shield's regeneration on a key press. Now the player can press
this key, and the shields will regen much faster, using the stored
power.
Other examples of circuits range from simple backup
power systems (useful for fighting enemies with EMP weapons) to
teleporter systems that automatically search for a empty spot
on the map, using a system of sensor parts. Homing missles that
are directed to a location on the map by the circuit (using a
homing beacon part). This location can be anything from a moving
enemy, to the mouse's position on the screen.
Just to be clear at this point in the document,
this is not a pure upgrade system, as would be found in a RPG,
this is complex system of electric parts. An example of this is
the list at the bottom of this document, which is a complete list
of the 62 parts that can be combined into hundreds of possible
circuits. An upgrade system continues to the very end of the game,
however the player has full access to all electric parts by about
the 8th level of the game. From this point on, the player is given
new challanges, and harder enemies in new combinations, pushing
him to create new and better circuits. The player's money amount
also goes up throughout the game, and allows the player to afford
more parts in the circuit at once.
Example circuits:
Auto-teleporting system - Uses a low-range movement sensor returning
non-zero output to trigger a random teleport.
Super-regen shields - Very low maximum shield charge on a T1 dual
shield, but extremely high regeneration. This means that the shields
only absorb a single hit, but will regenerate from that hit very
fast.
Homing missle shield wall - Uses a triggerless
homing missle weapon, and a homing beacon attached to a mech position
part, which creates a moving wall of homing missiles.
Power backup system - Diverts a small amount of
power to three series linked batteries, which automatically cut
into power the Mech when the power produced from the power generator
falls below a certain level. Very useful on levels with EMP enemies.
Shield frequency sensor system - This circuit takes
advantage of the fact that a weapon with the same frequency as
the enemy's shield frequency will pass through that shield unaffected.
It uses a direction sensor to find the enemy's that the player
is aiming at, and a shield frequency sensor to find that enemy's
shield frequency. It then feeds this frequency into the weapon's
frequency Inlink. This is very useful on a boss level where the
boss has a lot of shield charge (amount).
